Last week I had an adventure that I’ve been asked about a lot since, so I figured I’d post the details. First off, I had surgery last Thursday. I had a torn meniscus and had to get my knee scoped. Everything went great and I’m on the mend. Only three more weeks until I can ride again! Less than 48 hours after surgery, my wife and I decided to drive to the Miami area to meet up with some friends for the day. A few of my best friends were on a Caribbean cruise the week before. One was the Best Man at my wedding and the other was a Groomsmen and his wife whom I hadn’t met yet (they live in Canada). So, these weren’t just any old friends – definitely worth the nearly four hour drive from the Clermont.
As soon as we left the Orlando area we saw two dudes chillin’ on the side of the freeway holding a sign that said, “Miami”. My wife and I looked at each other and knew that we were both on board to pick them up. We turned around and picked up our stow-aways for the trip. As it turns out, these guys had an awesome story:
These guys had been hitchhiking for over 8 months! They were college students from the University of Oregon (one had graduated) that just got sick of the grind and decided to head out on an adventure. They made their money by playing music on the street corner for change. Their goal was to get to the Keys and save up enough money there to either get to Europe and continue the adventure there or to save up enough to skip Mexico and head into Central and South America. They were both only 25 and 26 yrs old and had great personalities and more stories than you can shake a stick at. It made our four hour drive very entertaining.
After we arrived, we parted ways with our nomadic travelers and met up with our friends in Ft. Lauderdale. We took them to the cable park at Rixen and taught them to ride cable for their first time ever. Both of the guys that rode landed tantrums off of a kicker within their first hour or so at the cable park! They were quick learners and I had a blast coaching them.
In summary, one of the most fun weekends that I’ve had in a long time! Thanks to all who made it possible! I wonder how our traveling nomads are doing? Hopefully they’re in the Keys by now! Good luck fellas!
